PUMA RACE ENGINES - CYLINDER HEAD PRICE GUIDELINES

Most cylinder heads require similar amounts of work to port and improve flow on them. Cast iron heads take more time because it is a harder material to work. However, not many heads are cast iron these days and the ones that are I generally avoid except for the Pinto. The following prices are applicable as a guide to aluminium four cylinder heads. The work I do includes removing the valve guides, chemically cleaning and checking the casting, porting, 3 angle valve seats, recutting the seats on the valves, skimming the head face. In all cases the cost of any new standard parts required, i.e. valves, guides and stem seals would be extra as would work to remove and helicoil broken manifold studs. I don't tend to differentiate much between normal race and road heads. I port every head to the optimum that valve size will flow given its intended application. However really specialised race engine work can require flow development to extract the absolute most from the port and special techniques to optimise the head for the cam and induction system being used. Most companies use some sort of scale of differentiations like stage 1,2 and 3 which are essentially meaningless and tell you nothing about the flow or power increase. Stage 1 probably means all you get is a flapwheel stuck up the port for five minutes, no seat cutting and no flow gain either. If you want to try and compare my head work with other people's then all I can suggest is you look at full race spec heads of the same valve sizes because that's basically what you get from me on a road head too. If you think you can choose cylinder head work based on shopping around on price you are reading the wrong website though.

2 valve heads - std valve sizes - £500

2 valve heads - big inlet valves on std inserts, std exhaust valves - £650

2 valve heads - big inlet valves that require larger inserts, std exhaust valves - £750 to £800

4 valve heads - std valve sizes - £650

4 valve heads - big inlet valves on std inserts, std exhaust valves - £875

4 valve heads - big inlet valves that require larger inserts, std exhaust valves - £1050

Race heads requiring flow development, larger exhaust valves if needed - POA usually as part of a total engine build
